Thomastown travelled to Piltown on Friday evening (3rd July)for what turned out to be a perfect evening for football — warm conditions, no breeze. Both teams had depleted squads due to the holiday season, but the game remained competitive throughout.
Thomastown started brightly, winning the throw in and moving the ball through the lines, showing strong football skills and athleticism. Piltown responded quickly, settling into the game and beginning to win battles in key positions around the pitch.
Once they found their rhythm, the Piltown girls made excellent use of possession, stringing together a series of passes and — crucially — finishing clinically in front of goal. Their shooting boots were certainly on, racking up 3 goals and 1 point in the first 15 minutes.
Water breaks were vital in the warm, muggy conditions.
The girls rotated smartly across midfield, centre forward, and centre back, showing great awareness and adaptability.
Thomastown responded well, closing the gap with a quick goal and a point. But Piltown reacted positively and started to gain control in key areas of the pitch.
As the game progressed, the scoreline began to widen. Piltown’s girls enjoyed long spells of possession, capped off with well deserved scores. The defence was excellent throughout .Prior to the game the coaches asked for a step up in physicality, the girls delivered in spades.
Half time brough a few positional changes and rotation of the bench.
Defensively 1- 7 the girls stood firm never taking a backwards step. Thomastown forwards were tracked, blocked and general tormented by the Piltown defence. This minimised scores conceded from the talented, physical Thomastown forwards.
It was great to see many examples of our defence overturn the ball and importantly linking up with midfield and on to our forwards.
The heart shown defensively was matched by our mid field and forwards. Thomastown backs didn’t make it easy but our girls recycled the ball and maintained possession. Points and goals were plentiful as our forwards worked to maintain play in Thomastown half . Piltown girls remained consistent in effort and concentration throughout the match.
In summary, it was a superb win, making it two victories from four so far in the Under 16 league.
